Late 17th-century house with significant
art collections and superb terraced gardens
The house, built in 1695 of mellow local stone,
was purchased and remodelled 1927–29 by Walter
Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, Chairman of Shell
1921–46 and son of the founder of that company.
Upton contains his outstanding collection of
English and continental Old Master paintings
including works by Hogarth, Stubbs, Guardi,
Canaletto, Brueghel and El Greco; tapestries;
French porcelain; Chelsea figures and 18th-century
furniture. There is an exhibition of paintings
and publicity posters commissioned by Shell
during Viscount Bearsted’s chairmanship; also
Lady Bearsted’s restored Art Deco bathroom.
The garden is very fine, with terraces, herbaceous

Charlecote Park

 |
Superb Tudor house and landscaped deer park
The home of the Lucy family for over 700 years,
the mellow brickwork and great chimneys of Charlecote
seem to sum up the very essence of Tudor England.
There are strong associations with both Queen
Elizabeth and Shakespeare, who knew the house
well – he is alleged to have been caught poaching
the estate deer. The rich early Victorian interior
contains many important objects from Beckford’s
Fonthill Abbey and, outside, the balustraded
formal garden opens onto a fine deer park landscaped
by ‘Capability’ Brown. Visitors can see a video
film of life at Charlecote Park in the Victorian
period.

John Shakespeare married Mary Arden, the
daughter of Robert Arden, a farmer from the
nearby village of Wilmcote. In 1556 John bought
the main part of the house in Henley Street
which is now known as the ‘Birthplace’ and their
family, including William, grew up there. John’s
principal business was that of a glover, but
he also traded as a wool and corn merchant,
and he is recorded in 1570 as being involved
in money-lending.

Banbury Town

 |
A nursery rhyme, 'Ride a Cock Horse', has
made Banbury one of the best-known towns in
England. It has been suggested that the 'Fine
Lady' of the nursery rhyme may have been Lady
Godiva or Elizabeth I. More likely it was a
local girl who rode in a May Day procession.
The original cross was pulled down at the end
of the 16th century. The present cross was erected
in 1859 to celebrate the wedding of the then
Princess Royal to Prince Frederick of Prussia.
